Atlantis Lab Sub AT33
Atlantis Lab offers us with the AT33, a powerful and high-efficiency subwoofer capable of supporting the AT21 bookshelf speaker. But it also pairs well with the AT16 for example, whose bass it extends with the same ease. Its aesthetic is similar and just as impeccable as the rest of the range. Its bass is both ample and deep, fast and taut, for a most jubilant pleasure. It excels as much for music where it knows how to humbly lurk in the low octaves, as for roaring in home cinema.
Capital specifications
Like the AT21, the AT33 subwoofer was also initially designed for recording studios. It then followed the flagship bookshelf speaker and also found its way into music lovers' homes. It is composed of a 33cm driver at the front, and a less traditional 26cm at the rear - like the rest of the range. The cabinet offers enough volume for the bass to express itself without processing. It goes down to 28Hz with a colossal efficiency of 101dB, which makes it the ideal companion to the AT21 if you are looking for the last octaves. It is supplied with a 500W integrated amplifier - the S500 Atohm - with adjustable phase and crossover frequency. These monstrous characteristics allow it to find its place in any auditorium, from the large room to the intimate recording studio, including of course the living room of music lovers. For a good connection with the AT21 or AT16, a cut between 45Hz and 55Hz at 12dB per octave is recommended, with a 180-degree phase. This basic setting will likely differ depending on your acoustics and the placement of the subwoofer.
Muscle and style
The Sub AT33 is a large subwoofer, which incorporates the brand's own characteristics. The solid oak sides are beveled and grooved to eliminate unwanted resonances and make listening even cleaner and more transparent. The imitation leather covering is successful: the grain is visible but light, the tension is perfect, and the ash-brown or white colors are particularly timeless and pleasing. The whole is very elegant, well executed and a great success, capable of blending into a wide variety of studios or living rooms, ranging from contemporary to more rustic.
The paradox of the true sub
Due to its characteristics as a pure extension of the Atlantis Lab speakers, and its more than generous performance, the bass produced can be both discreet and subtle - leading us to wonder if the subwoofer is active; it is enough to turn it off to realize how much its contribution instantly becomes indispensable to us. But it can also let loose, especially in home cinema , and make the moment jubilant by its imperiousness. In all cases, the response is transparent, clean and precise, presenting an absence of compression and low distortion. But this paradox is the prerogative of the best, and in both cases it results in a well-deserved addiction.
